Mission Possible: successful takt time reduction at MHI Vestas
Pontis has successfully concluded the takt time reduction program at MHI Vestas. Over the past nine months, takt times at the rotor blade production facility of the world's most powerful wind turbine have dropped dramatically to one third of the original situation.
Responsible Pontis Project Lead Edgar Suselbeek says proudly: “I have to make a big compliment to the team of MHI Vestas. I can imagine that the reduction targets seemed to be ‘Mission Impossible’ at first. From our experience we already knew it could be done, but people must be open minded to incorporate new methods. The team has done so well over the past months; without them we could not have made this development. A big thank you to the entire MHI Vestas team for this excellent cooperation and keep up the good work”!
Since collaboration went so well over the past months, Pontis has already started the next project at MHI Vestas.
Struck by lightning
Lightning causes major problems for companies, including damaging buildings and critical equipment. The average lightning discharge releases 55 kWh in only 100 to 300 microseconds. This calls for effective methods of blade protection on wind turbines, along with their internal electrical and electronic systems.
ERICO, part of Pentair, is a producer of advanced lightning protection systems. In search of better ways to integrate these systems into wind turbines, ERICO commissioned Pontis to manufacture assemblies of a newly developed Gen II side receptorin preparation for testing according to IEC61400-24: Wind Turbines – Part 24: Lightning Protection. Pontis integrated the necessary tooling within a rotor blade by infusing/laminating the fitting directly into the composite structure of the blade. The infused fitting ensures a controlled process which, is very important for guaranteeing the quality and reliability of the lightningsystem.
In order to test the innovation, Pontis created several composite test panels with integrated side receptors as well as a 10 meter rotor blade tip complete with side and tip receptors. Finally, all components survived throughout the rigors of the multiple lightning strike tests.
This is where the future starts: WindEnergy Hamburg
In September 2014, the big new trade fair for wind energy was premiering in Hamburg and became a meeting point for large numbers of exhibitors and visitors alike. Pontis was present as an exhibitor, along with some 1200 co-exhibitors and over 33.000 visitors!
September 27-30, 2016, Hamburg will again become the gateway to the world of wind energy. The world’s leading expo for wind energy, WindEnergy Hamburg, will provide a comprehensive overview of the current status and future prospects of the sector – along the entire value chain of the international wind industry, onshore and offshore. It will take place on the grounds of the Hamburg Messe exhibition center.
This is the wind event you cannot miss! Pontis will again have a presence in Hamburg so whipe your calendar clean in the last week of September and participate in this inspiring event!
JEC World 2016: broadening horizons
In order to reflect the dynamic growth of the composites industries and to provide international exhibitors and attendees with the best opportunities to grow their business, JEC has opened all horizons and changed the name of its annual Paris event from JEC Europe to JEC World.
The largest international gathering of composites professionals has outgrown itself. And with the expectations growing as fast as the number of participants and visitors, JEC had to find a new and more appropriate venue for this massive event. Hence JEC World 2016 will take place in Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center from 8 – 10 March.
Of course Pontis will be present to be inspired by the latest developments and innovations, next generation materials and new creative applications. It is an event you should not miss and we hope to meet you at this new and improved JEC World event and do some catching up.

Tomorrow’s Technology Today: Pontis @ ESEF 2016
For the first time Pontis will be exhibiting at ESEF: the largest and most important exhibition in the Benelux area in the field of supply, outsourcing, product development and engineering. Under the theme: Tomorrow’s Technology Today, the regional manufacturing industry gathers from 15 – 18 March in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht.
Today’s increasing demand for sustainable solutions and the growing market for composites provide interesting opportunities for Pontis. Our extensive knowledge and experience in the development of composite products can be very valuable to parties who consider the transition to composites or companies aiming to bring a new product to market. We care keen on exploiting this expertise in markets other than wind and ESEF offers us a great opportunity to get in contact with these parties.
At ESEF 2016, we would like to acquaint you with the endless possibilities of composite structures. We will showcase our different fields of expertise and of course, if desired, we can go deeper into any issues or needs your company may have. Please contact us to schedule a visit to our booth or a bilateral meeting. You can find us in Hall 2, booth 2F031.
FREE ENTRANCE
If you register online, you can visit ESEF 2016 for free. You will receive your badge beforehand and you will also have free entrance to the TechniShow.
