A pragmatic approach always applies within Pontis, which means that the technology and knowledge developed must meet the customer's demand and be directly applicable in a production process. That is why we test new technologies at an early stage in our own lab. A theoretical foundation, understanding the process, is of great importance. By attracting trainees and graduate students Pontis wants to introduce young engineers to the dynamic and fast-growing composite industry, still unknown to many. At Pontis you will be a part of the team and will be supervised accordingly. Independence and commitment are highly appreciated and requested.

Internship assignments
At Pontis we have and will continue to work in different sectors on many different types of composite applications. We do however focus our research and development activities on specific themes and topics and currently this includes Affordable Automation, Sensoring and Sustainability.
If an assignment on one these topics is of interest, then please reach out to us with your ideas for a project. To limit help the scope and develop actual project subjects please read on further for information on these topics. We can detail and tailor the project to fit most specific student assignment requirements. This can include duration, skillsets, work experience, mentoring, etc. We expect the student to broadly fit the following profile:
- Motivated
- Practical approach
- Independent / proactive
- Good knowledge of the English language
- Affinity with technology and innovation
Affordable Automation For Composites
This topic is relevant to the eMobility (Electric Vehicle market) but not limited to. For us the project subject area is broad and can include design of a product, manufacturing, or a combination. The essence of the topic is related to producing composite products at high volume. For some markets and products this is currently a barrier to utilizing composites materials. Considering two volume extremes, we have on one hand one-off specialized crafted products, and on the other hand automated aerospace products. In other cases the benefits or desire for composites mitigates the costs of the materials and production. With more affordable automation this bring economics for using composites to new sectors including for example eMobility.
Example research questions/topics:
- How to best design for automated production?
- What existing or upcoming processes suit automation?
- Low-cost automation factory set-up.
- Unit cell (micro-factory production).
! Please feel free to add your own related research question.
Industry 4.0 of the composite production
The last few years new technologies are developed in different markets to support production and automate certain processes. At Pontis we believe that additional technology in composite part production could help improving understanding the production process and the production quality.
In het wind turbine market, we are always looking into new opportunities to improve processes and quality of the WTB production. Due to the large size of composite components - now a days over 100+ meters - it’s not always easy to use solutions from other markets.
Currently, our main focus point is the implementation of (wireless) sensor technology in the WTB production process, mainly to monitor the infusion and cure process.
We believe this is important in understanding what is “happing” in the infusion process and meanwhile monitor quality of the process.
Some research topic examples:
- Validation of wireless sensor technology, in a composite part (WTB) environment.
- Development and integration of resin flow front monitoring.
- Pressure sensor integration.
- Imbedded mould concept.
Sustainabiliy
Sustainable engineering is the process of designing or operating systems such that they use energy and resources sustainably, in other words, at a rate that does not compromise the natural environment, or the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
With respect to composites, it is important to understand the overall life cycle and carbon costs. This includes recycling and understanding how to design and selection of processes which fit the sustainability requirements.
Some research topic examples:
- Tools to calculate carbon foot prints.
- Design methods to utilise organic fibres.
- Factory layouts to reduce waste.
